Challenge
The DC DMV driver’s manuals were dense, text-heavy documents that made it difficult for readers to locate critical safety and regulatory information. The manuals also needed to serve a diverse audience, including non-native English speakers and first-time drivers, while meeting accessibility and usability standards.
The challenge was to redesign multiple long-format manuals, each exceeding fifty pages, into structured, reader-friendly publications that improved navigation, clarified complex rules and procedures, and created a cohesive visual identity aligned with Washington, DC.

Approach
I led the redesign of a series of long-format driver education manuals for the District of Columbia Department of Motor Vehicles, including the Driver’s, Motorcycle, and Commercial Driver’s Manuals. Working from dense, text-heavy source documents, I translated complex regulatory content into clear, structured layouts that improved usability and comprehension.
I applied typography, visual hierarchy, and color coding to break down information into digestible sections, supported by callouts, diagrams, and navigation cues. A consistent grid system and design standards created cohesion across all manuals while allowing each to maintain a distinct visual tone.
To reinforce local identity, I designed illustrated covers inspired by Washington, DC architecture while aligning with agency branding. The manuals were produced for both print and digital formats, including an interactive flipbook to enhance navigation.
Accessibility was a core focus, with layouts designed to support multilingual translation and improve clarity for a broad audience, including non-native English speakers and first-time drivers.
